I would never be anyone's second best. It hurts far too much. Lovely prose but, I feel such sadness for this person if she is only thought of as something to fall back on.
Sometimes I think we all have (unknowingly perhaps?)two parts - we love and we also fail to see that at times we have the potential to hurt - but can be so easily hurt (ourselves) by the one we love...

Strong and gut-level poem here, Laura. I hope that stanza two eventually rules.

The form you chose for this poem works very well with the words.
Mary: I hope she leaves him!
Daydreamer: It is indeed painful to be someone's second choice, but unfortunately I see it all around me, not only in love but also in friendships.
Short and powerful. Sometimes the fewer the words, the more powerful the sentiment. And the feelings portrayed. Very nice.
What a situation ~ Like the simple yet powerful 3 stanzas ~
this is so applicable to so many people. excellently put. x
the chosen form lends greater poignancy to the whole by graphically highlighting the conflict as well as the gulf between expectation and reality.
Excellent!
Very well penned. It says it all succinctly and so well.
Really a touching poem highlighting the dillema of a lover. Indeed a lovely piece
longing...so beautifully expressed.
